At the northern end of the Isle of Portland, experience World War II history like never before at Castletown D-Day Centre. This museum is a recreation of the historic dockyard where American troops launched a D-Day attack in France against the Nazis in 1944. Military machines, weaponry, and vehicles are all on display, and most of the items in the museum can be touched and climbed on for an interactive experience. You can see quarries from which Portland stone, a limestone used for many public buildings, such as St Paul's Cathedral, has long been extracted. The first cruise ship to arrive at Portland Port will be AIDA Cruise's AIDAbella, with the German ship in port between 8am and 7.30pm. Once at the hotel here you can take in the stunning views of the 16 mile long Chesil Beach. Nearby are located a set of Olympic rings carved from Portland Stone to indicate it was a venue for the games. At the furthest point on Portland is the iconic Portland Bill Lighthouse. The 100foot high red and white one still is use today is the most famous. Behind it a cycle and footpath will take you to Portland Marina and the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
Perhaps one of the contributing factors to the wonder of Portland Port is that it lies on the Jurassic Coast, which is a world heritage site. There’s a whole lot of natural ecosystems in this beautiful part and plenty of local attractions of which some famous castles and fascinating towns such as Bath and Dorchester form a part. Portland Port knows what to do for cruise passengers and they provide a 3-shot salute from the Nothe Fort Victorian Artillery Brigade. However, the views from its gardens are probably the very best on Portland.
The first cruise ship to dock at the extended pier was Disney Magic (on May 23, 2017). From gentle walks and relaxing rounds of golf to high-speed RIB rides and paddle boarding in Portland harbour, host to the 2012 Olympic sailing events. The main shopping streets in the town are St Mary Street, St Thomas Street and New Bond Street. These are all located at the hub of local transport and within five minutes walk of the beach. The rusty crane was used to load stone and lower small fishing boats into the sea. With the Lobster Pot Café again another place to take lunch or tea watching the ships and sometimes small boats navigate around ‘The Bill’, as it’s referred to by the local people. The Pulpit Inn is located there and is the counties most southerly pub too. If you do head up to Stonehenge, make sure the tour allows enough time there. Taking into account possible queues for the shuttle buses to the stones, you really need a minimum of two hours.

Piling works started in October 2022, and the project was completed in April 2023 (fully operational by May 1st). Final quay surface finishing works were scheduled for the period Oct 2023 thru Feb 2024. For the project were used ~380K tonnes of infill material (locally sourced) and ~4800 tons of steel. Overall, Portland’s strategic investments to attract more cruise ships yield significant economic benefits, especially with the increasing interest from cruise lines in homeporting their vessels in the UK.
The interior is very well preserved with its two pulpits, box pews and galleries which are all surviving. The extensive churchyard has recently been repaired and is a treasure trove of fabulous headstones and memorials. Tout Quarry an arts space and nature reserve ideal for the cruise guide to Portland. Traces of early human occupation nearby have been recorded and go back to Mesolithic times. With a submerged sand bank the lighthouse has been very important in keeping mariners safe. Vehicles, full size Spitfire model, guns and artefacts from the period help to tell the story.
Heading east to Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door that are big draws on this part of the coast. Dorchester to the north, the county town and where famous author Thomas Hardy worked. Frontline Coffee, Taylor’s Mobideck, the Boat That Rocks and the Sailing Academy all have great places to sit, eat and take in the harbour activities and marina views. Quiddles café at Chesil Cove offers some terrific seafood as do most eateries in the area being a prime seafood paradise. Rufus Castle built in the 11th century built by William Rufus II which overlooks Church Ope Cove. Taking the steps down to the cove pass what’s called the ‘pirate’s graveyard’.
